Creating your projects without a lighting designer is like going out for dinner and only eating what's in the bread basket. The bread may be excellent, but you're missing may more interesting dishes.
Expertly placed lighting adds another dimension to space, bringing an interior design project to life.
Lifestyle- Preference-Colour Scheme
Evaluating your daily habits and possible projects will ensure you plan the proper amount of light for your room.
Fixtures finishes and styles should be examined; there is no sense in being stuck with light you hate.
The colour temperature and the lumen output of the bulbs you choose can transform the colour of your room from sunny beams of daylight to the intimate glow of the fireplace. Remember that darker colours absorb more light, which means you will need to increase the intensity or number of lights in rooms with darker paint or furniture finishes.
Provides overall illumination ensuring that a space is adequately lit. It creates a comfortable level of brightness without glare allowing people to move around safely and preform tasks. This type of general lighting is typically uniform and, dare we say, boring. That’s why the next two layers of light are crucial in lighting design.
Task lighting, provides illumination for specific tasks performed in an area. It is focused and bright, designed for specific activities such as reading, cooking.
When choosing light for this particular layer, you should first evaluate what is done in that designated area. The light should remove distracting shadows and be glare-free, as well as bright enough to prevent eyestrain. For example, if you typically read in your favorite chair near the bookshelf, you may want a floor lamp or swing arm sconce for better reading light. Commonly used task lights are table and floor lamps, desk lamps, under cabinet lighting, bathroom vanity lighting, and pendant lighting above smaller areas such as a kitchen island.
Accent Lighting is used to highlight particular feature of a space, such as artworks, plants or architectural details. This type of lighting adds depth and dimension, creating focal points that draw the eye and add interest.
Decorative lighting fixtures, such as chandeliers and wall sconces, serve as artistic elements in themselves. While they provide illumination, their primary role is to contribute to the overall aesthetic of the space.
One of the first things to consider when choosing decorative lighting is the effect the design has on the light that is transmitted. Decorative lighting is all about making a statement, complimenting a style and/or adding some character to a room. However, it pays to give some forethought to how it will transmit light before going ahead with it. For example, a pendant shade that is dark will direct light upwards and downwards whereas a lighter shade will allow for light to be diffused and seep through and provide an outward glow and with it any pattern from the fabric used.
