 What is Surge Protection?

Surge protection is like a shield for electrical equipment and electronic devices. Surge protection safeguards them against sudden spikes in electrical voltage, helping to prevent damage and preserve lifespan.


What causes power surges?

Power surges are caused by events that occur both inside and outside of buildings. Lightning strikes, blown transformers, and power outages happen outside. However, around 80% of all damaging transients and surges are generated inside the building. For example, when an HVAC system or backup generator starts up or shuts down, the resulting power fluctuations can put a strain on the other sensitive electronics in the facility. Over time, this can result in failures and diminished lifespan of equipment. LED lighting and anything with microcircuitry are vulnerable to these power fluctuations. And they happen all the time.

Surge protection works because electricity always follows the path of least resistance. Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) draw excess away from your facility and equipment, absorbing as much excess voltage as possible.
